Tim Nugent tougher than BFGoodrich Tires in Baja

Roger Norman and the 2011 Baja team is gathering at Norman Motorsports in El Cajon, CA for final preparations and training maneuvers before heading across the border to pre-run for the 2011 SCORE Baja 500. This years team will consist of Roger Norman driving the entire 500 miles with Lance Clifford as the co-driver for the first 300 miles and then Tim Nugent will co-driver to the finish line in celebration of his full recovery. “Tim Nugent is the only thing tougher than my BFGoodrich Tires in Baja! He is the motorcycle rider hit at last years Baja 500, who over the last 11 months has successfully recovered from 23 broken bones,” said Roger Norman. “When Tim told me he still wanted to conquer the Baja 500 I asked him to be a part of our team. Not only will he conquer it, but he will be in the truck with me at the finish line to celebrate a win and his full recovery!”

A year after one of the most horrific moments in Roger Norman’s racing career, the anniversary couldn’t be brighter. “Roger is a great person. Throughout the whole ordeal at the hospital he would come to visit,” said Tim Nugent. “We are taking something tragic and making something better out of it. We’re both healing. It’s a celebration, it’s not a closure, it’s another door opening.”

During the 2010 Baja 500 race, first time Baja competitor, Sportsman motorcycle rider Tim Nugent from Georgia, continued to race on course instead of pulling off and waiting for dust to clear after being passed by #35 Robbie Pierce’s trophy truck and didn’t realize that the #8 Roger Norman trophy truck was in the hunt to pass Pierce. The motorcycle was grazed by the right front tire of Normans truck in the blinding dust. As soon as the incident occurred, Norman stopped the truck, called for immediate assistance and got out to assist the down rider. “The accident with the Sportsman motorcycle rider in the dust has shook me to the core. I have been devastated and demoralized about off-road racing since Saturday’s race,” commented Roger Norman in an email to his fellow Trophy Truck competitors immediately after the incident. “We have all had our close calls and I can tell you that until you run someone over in the dust of another trophy truck at over 100 mph you will not understand the devastating feeling that is created even if they come out with non life threatening injuries.”

In the past year, Roger Norman has made a significant impact on the Off Road Racing Community educating and demanding better safety measures to be instilled into racing environments. Best in the Desert Series has mandated red flashing lights on the helmet of motorcycle and ATV Riders, SCORE has widened the start times between the two classes, and all series are more aware of their responsibility to help keep racers safe and is encouraging training programs for sportsman race classes.

Meanwhile, Tim Nugent was successfully completing his physical therapy and pushing himself with every personal trainer appointment. “It has showed me what I can do. The Doctors had to stop telling me ‘what I wasn’t going to be able to do’ and instead change to telling me ‘what I couldn’t do’ because they knew that I was going to try everything!” said Tim Nugent. “I think something that Roger and I have in common is if we are told we can’t do it, we try even harder to be successful at it!”

“I think the hardest part is going to be getting in and out of the truck having to wear my brace,” said Nugent. Turning to this weeks preparation for the upcoming 2011 Baja 500, the Norman Motorsports team will be timing tire changes, belt changes and getting in and out of the truck. “It is almost impossible to do as great of a job as what Lance does as a co-driver,” said Roger Norman. “I think with some practice and training we can get Tim up to speed to help for the 140 or so miles that he will be in the truck.”

Stylin Trucks

The 3 person team will head to Baja to pre-run later this week through next week. They will be available at Contingency in Ensenada, Baja on Friday June 3rd and will start 17th on Saturday June 4th in the #8 Crystal Bay Casino Trophy Truck.

No matter what the finishing time or place, it is a guarantee that you will see this team up on top of the Crystal Bay Casino #8 Trophy Truck celebrating Tim Nugent’s full recovery!

Roger Norman at Mexicana Logistics 300

Roger Norman didn’t have the finish that he had hoped for in the Mexicana Logistics 300 last weekend. Overheating problems have consistently plagued the single seat Trophy Truck since Norman bought it, and most recently during the NORRA 1000 those issues caused the team longer finishing times. The Norman Motorsports team has continually chased options and it looked like the Ensenada Motorsports team had succeeded at finding the problems when the truck tested perfect last Thursday. Unfortunately, race day was a different story when the truck rapidly overheated and they only made it to RM12 before choosing to not take additional risks destroying the engine further.
The team, which mostly consisted of local Mexican racers, tested the truck on Thursday and it was absolutely perfect and had never been better. “After having to drive by the oil temp gauge in the NORRA Race in a cool April, I wanted to make sure that in the October 110 degree heat that we wouldn’t have the same problem,” remembers Norman. “After testing, I felt confident that we would have an excellent race.”
Saturday morning, race day, something changed. No one knows what happened. But it was overheating with no fix in sight. “I buckled in and took the truck down and back to warm up the engine when I saw the water temp gauge spike to 250 degrees. I shut down the truck and radioed to the crew for assistance. They tried to burp the radiator, and they thought they got the air bubble out, but we could never get the gauge to show cooler,” explains Norman. “By this time, I was late to the starting line. We decided that with only 12 miles to the first pit, that we should at least start the race and limp to the pit to try and fix it there and it just may pass the air pocket on its own.”

Norman took the green flag going the slowest that he has ever gone in a truck, and limped it along hoping to clear the problem. The gauge fluctuated from 215-250 degrees as Norman attempted to go as slow as he could without getting stuck in silt beds and sand wash’s. After only 12 miles, they called the race. “The truck was perfect. Not sure what happened, if it was a head gasket that went bad or what caused the air bubble, but it made for a very short race,” said Norman.

Primm: Jones Motorsports event report

It's been a banner season for veteran off road racer, Jesse Jones. Two victories in four races and chasing the most coveted prize in off road racing, the SCORE Trophy Truck Championship. Jesse Jones has always been a popular fan favorite among the titans of SCORE Trophy Truck racers and this past Saturday, he delivered a winning performance at the SCORE Primm 300, Southern Nevada's most difficult race course, exciting fans around the globe.

Armed with his weapon of choice, a 850 horsepower GEISER Brothers state-of-the-art Trophy Truck, Jesse Jones let it all hang out as he battled through the field of 30 elite Trophy Trucks capturing his second SCORE Trophy Truck win this year.

Jones earned this tremendous victory averaging 57.44 mph over the 274.4-mile racecourse in the rugged Nevada desert. "We had a real solid run and one single flat tire that was well deserved. The entire Geiser Brothers package performed great and the best tire in the desert survived the brutal punishment I gave it. I couldn't ask for better performance from an off road racing tire," explained Jesse Jones.

Jesse Jones, a longtime off road racing veteran, who has raced his way through the ranks over the past two decades, had to work hard for the Primm 300 victory. As the green flag dropped, Jesse started exactly in the middle of the 30-truck field in the 15th position behind reigning SCORE TT Champion and NASCAR racer, Robby Gordon. Jones took advantage of his not so great starting position utilizing his keen ability to go fast in the heavy dust. As the race reached the 100-mile mark, Jones had already made a move towards the front and set a pace that eventually led not just the Trophy Truck class win, but the OVERALL victory!

Rick Geiser explained, "At the start line this morning, Jesse was relaxed and said he was ready to go out and win the race. He was focused today and it showed all day long. This victory was a great team effort and everything just clicked perfectly this race."

It's no secret that the deserts surrounding Primm, Nevada are the most battered and rocky terrain off road racers see each and every year. This year was no different as Jones railed his Geiser Brothers built trophy truck through the brutal rocks and terrain enroute to a dominating performance.

What was different this season than others was the #76 SCORE Trophy Truck arrived with confidence and poise after winning the San Felipe 250 and racing for the win at the Baja 500 in June. Jones has been in the hunt for the season point's championship since the first race of the season and everyone knew Jesse Jones was a solid pick for the win. Las Vegas odds makers had Jones at 3:1 and he didn't disappoint at the sports books!

Mild weather greeted this year's SCORE Primm 300 racers and by the time Jesse Jones took the green flag 85 degree weather and slight breeze set the background for what turned out to be a near perfect day for Jones Racing.

Charging off the line with a vengeance, Jesse set a fast pace over the first 68.6 miles, one full lap, with a fast lap time of 1:08:11. As the race progressed, Jones waged his own war inside his race truck as his transmission lost a couple gears. Both the second and third laps were 6 minutes slower, but Jesse wicked up his Geiser Brothers Trophy Truck and finished the final lap with a time of 1:10:13 earning the overall victory by a slim margin of 3 minutes, 29 seconds over runner up, Robbie Pierce.

"At this point in the season, our confidence level is about peaked. We've spent a lot of time getting to this level and the team is firing on all cylinders. Joe Weining worked his butt off prepping the truck and everyone on the crew was solid all day long," said the smiling Jesse Jones.

The win was the second of the season for the Arizona based racing veteran. Jones captivated the desert racing world with a flawless run at this year's SCORE San Felipe 250 and vied for the winner's trophy at the SCORE Baja 500, where he battled with off road racing veteran, Scott McMillin.

"We had a very close race at the 500. Scott passed me while we splashed for gas in the last 100 miles of the race at Santo Tomas and we couldn't catch him after that. Racing at this level you have to have a little bit of luck and we ended up second to Scott and Andy. They won the season opener at Laughlin and then I won at San Felipe. They won again at the 500 in the close race and now I won here at Primm. To settle the score this season, it all comes down to the Baja 1000 and I can't wait," explained the grinning Jesse.

"My schedule has me prerunning in Baja during the entire time that SCORE has the racecourse open for prerunning. The world famous Larry Ragland is racing with me and we have planned to get some serious work done before the race. I promise the world that we'll be in a great position to win this year's Baja 1000."
(For Puro Off-Road from Baja visit www.puro-off-road.com - For this years Baja 1000 peninsula run visit the special online edition www.baja-1000-live.com independent Off-Road eZine.

Jones arrived to the SCORE Primm 300 involved in an intense battle for the most prestigious off road racing championship in the world, the SCORE Desert Series Trophy Truck trophy title. Heading into this year's SCORE Primm 300 he trailed Andy McMillin by a margin of 24 points and after Saturday's victory they are separated by a mere 3 points heading into the most difficult race in the universe, the SCORE Baja 1000, a 1000-mile nonstop point-to-point off road race. Racers will buckle up in Ensenada taking the green flag and will race across the most inhospitable terrain in North America ending in the capital city of La Paz.

"Racing for the SCORE Trophy Truck championship is something special and having to prove yourself in the longest point-to-point race in the world and against the toughest racers on the planet, is exactly the position what every racer ever thinks about. It's sort of like bottom of the ninth inning with bases loaded in the World Series and I'm at bat. This is what I've dreamed about since I started racing and I can't wait to put the #76 in the dirt of the Baja Peninsula," said Jesse.

Jones Motorsports would like to thank GEISER Brothers, BFGoodrich, Fox Racing Shox and Vision X for their continued support, as well as Joe Weining for an incredible prep job.

24th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Desert racers Ron Whitton of Arizona and Southern California’s Robby Bell received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions held Saturday for the upcoming 24th Annual MasterCraft SafetyTecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Whitton races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Bell competes in Class 22 for open motorcycles.

Round 2 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 12-14 in Mexico’s picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located 120 miles south of the U.S. borer on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez.

With nearly 275 entries expected to compete in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232-mile race, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. Pacific time on Saturday, March 13, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. local time. The start and finish line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 10-hour time limit to become an official finisher.

Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2010.

Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars was Germany’s Armin Schwarz and teammate Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif. Riding the first ATV off the line will be Class 25 team led by Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif.

With a race-record 32 entries so far in the marquee SCORE racing division for 800 horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Whitton, 66, owner of one of the largest plumbing contractor companies in Arizona, will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world’s top desert racers in the No. 39 Whitton Companies Ford F-150. Whitton, Mesa, Ariz., and his co-driver Chas Dana were fifth and 10th respectively in last year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

Last year’s overall motorcycle and ATV winners are entered this year. Last year’s overall motorcycle champion was the JCR Honda team of Kendall Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif./Tim Weigand, Santa Clarita, Calif. on the No. 1x Honda CRF450X and the Overall ATV winners were the team of Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif./Harold Goodman Jr., Brownstown, Mich./Josh Caster, El Cajon, Calif., on the No. 1a Honda TRX700X. Norman’s team will start seventh in Motorcycles while Matlock’s squad will be the first ATV off the line.

Bell, 24, of Sun City, Calif., who left the factory Honda team at the end of 2008 after winning the two-wheel overall title in San Felipe three straight years (2006, 2007, 2008), returns to San Felipe for the first time since on a Kawasaki, leading a two-motorcycle Bruce Penhall Motorsports charge to Baja on the No. 2x Kawasaki KX450F. His co-rider, also a former Honda champion, is legendary SCORE Baja racer Steve Hengeveld, 34, Oak Hills, Calif., who was the overall San Felipe motorcycle winner for four straight year’s with Honda icon Johnny Campbell (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004).

Kawasaki will have factory-supported entries in San Felipe for this first time since 1996 and will attempt to break the JCR Racing Honda dynasty which has won 12 of the last 13 SCORE San Felipe 250 races.

In the first 23 years of this race, Honda has earned 14 overall motorcycle victories (including the last four years), Kawasaki has six, KTM has two and Husqvarna has one.

In Saturday’s computerized drawing, SCORE Trophy-Truck had the most entries with 32, followed by the unlimited Class 1 with 18 and Class 1-2/1600 with 12. While 192 entries were received in time for the start draw, late registration will be accepted up until race morning and as many as 100 additional entries are expected.

Among the motorcycle classes, the open Class 22 had the most vehicles entered in the drawing with 11.

Besides the K. Norman and Matlock teams, the other defending class winners entered so far this year are: Ronny Wilson, Long Beach, Calif. (Class 1), Mike Lawrence, Sunset Beach, Calif. (Class 10), Marc Burnett, Chula Vista, Calif. (Class 6), Jose Canchola Jr., Mexicali, Mexico (Class 7 but has switched to Class 6), Dave Crinklaw, Reedley, Calif. (Class 8), Eric Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico (Class 11), Gavin Skilton, Anaheim, Calif. (Stock Mini), Mike Johnson, El Paso, Texas (Class 30), Jim O’Neal, Simi Valley, Calif. (Class 50), Craig Christy, Burbank, Calif. (Class 24), Reid Rutherford, Montrose, Colo. (Class 26 but has switched to Class 7-2) and returning with SCORE Trophy-Truck regular Cameron Steele as rider of record is Brian Campbell, Bakersfield, Calif. (Class 40).

Christy, last season’s SCORE Overall and Class 24 ATV season point champion, has also entered a team that he will lead this year in Class 25 as well, seeking a pair of class wins in San Felipe.

Also returning this year to defend his Sportsman class race victory for the third straight year among those entered so far is Sportsman Car winner Peter Lang, Santa Rosa, Calif.

This year’s race will use a similar 232-mile race course as the past two years with a few modifications other than those caused by weather conditions. Running in a counter clockwise direction out of San Felipe up to and then parallel to Highway 3 (southside) and south back down through three of the most picturesque and challenging washes in all of Baja.

After the start at the landmark San Felipe Arches, the race will proceed north towards Zoo Road. The area approaching the Zoo Road crossing has been bladed again, which makes it a safer approach to the popular spectator area. That area will again be fenced, have grandstands and a jump and will be patrolled so that spectators can watch the action but not put themselves in way of the action.

For the first time the course will travel east of instead of on the graded Morelia Road (after the Zoo Road junction) to the entrance to Matomi Wash. This will be one of the few times that SCORE will run through the majestic Matomi Wash in the early part of the race instead of near the end. After Matomi, the challenging course will run through two more of the infamous Baja canyons—Huatomote and Chanate before heading back Northwest for the final sprint to the finish line.

The pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and tech inspection of the vehicles in the race will be held on Friday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the picturesque Malecon, flanked by the Sea of Cortez on one side and the popular restaurants and night clubs of San Felipe on the other.

At 10 a.m. on Sunday (March 14), the awards celebration will be held in front of The Beachcomber Night Club on the Malecon.

At the 24th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, MasterCraft Racing has entered not only company owner Robbie Pierce’s No. 30 Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy-Truck, but also the No. 20 Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy-Truck to be driven by eight-time SCORE season class point champion Rob MacCachren of Las Vegas and the No. 42 Chevy Silverado driven by Will Staats, Valencia, Calif. All three trucks were built by prominent chassis builder Mike Julson’s Jimco Racing Products of Santee, Calif. Julson is listed as a co-driver for both Pierce and MacCachren for this race, if needed.

The MasterCraft racers will not be eligible to win any part of the special $10,000 MasterCraft Safety cash contingency bonus purse MasterCraft Safety has offered for this year’s San Felipe race.

In San Felipe, Pierce will start fourth, MacCachren 21st and Staats 25th in the massive SCORE Trophy-Truck field.

Following his dominating season-opening victory at the 16th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, third-generation desert racer Andy McMillin, who was recently honored as the 2009 Dirt Sports Magazine Driver of the Year, finds himself at the top of a very crowded Overall leaderboard in the 2010 SCORE Desert Series point standings. With 63 points, McMillin, who will split driving the rest of the season with his father Scott McMillin, also leads the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck class for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks in his No. 31 McMillin Realty Ford F-150.

With just 22 points separating the top 21 in 2010 SCORE Overall points after Laughlin’s season-opener, SCORE racers are now preparing to begin official pre-running which opens on Saturday, Feb. 27. A new attraction this year during the pre-running window will be the San Felipe Tequila Festival March 5-7.

In addition to season class point championships, drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are also racing for part of the nearly $400,000 in cash purse and contingency postings as well as earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season. Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 25th consecutive year, a total of 59 drivers remain eligible after Round 1 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series. Racers are also competing for the annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards, including the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Year award.

BAJA 1000 2009 Race Pilot Quotes

ANDY McMILLIN Trophy Truck #31 (First in TT class and first overall four-wheel vehicle. Andy started and drove to race mile 206. His father, Scott, drove to RM 500 and Andy drove the final leg.)

Andy said: "I started the race and I think we started 17th on the road. The plan was just to kind of take it easy and kind of let the race come to us. Sal (Fish) laid out a really rough, tough course this year. We knew that it was going to take one trip that didn’t have any problems to get the win. That was our plan all day – stay smooth and not have any downtime, no flat tires. I gave my dad the truck at mile 206 and I think we were seventh on the road and pretty close on the overall lead. My dad drove the San Felipe loop and the Mike’s loop. By the time he got to San Felipe, he was the first truck on the road. My dad handed me a helluva lead, so it was pretty easy. It was kind of just stay on the racecourse and you won’t get in trouble, so that was our plan and we followed it and let the race come to us, really."
